Romania is traditionally a meat-loving country, but Bucharest’s vegetarian and vegan scene has grown enormously. You’ll find dedicated vegan restaurants, raw food spots, and — importantly — many “regular” restaurants with genuinely creative vegetarian options rather than afterthought salads.
The key is knowing where to go. This guide covers both fully plant-based restaurants and omnivore spots where vegetarian dishes are taken seriously.
How We Chose These
This guide is compiled using publicly available data including Google reviews, ratings, and other public sources. We aggregate ratings from multiple platforms, read hundreds of reviews, and distill the consensus into original descriptions. Ratings reflect real visitor experiences across 2025-2026. We do not accept paid placements.
Traditional Romanian Vegetarian Options
Romanian cuisine actually has many vegetarian-friendly dishes, especially during Orthodox fasting periods (when many Romanians eat vegan):
- Fasole batuta — Smoky bean puree with onions
- Zacusca — Roasted eggplant and pepper spread
- Mamaliga — Romanian polenta, often served with cheese and sour cream
- Salata de vinete — Smoky eggplant salad
- Ciuperci la gratar — Grilled mushrooms
Ask at any traditional Romanian restaurant — they’ll usually have several meat-free options.
George Butunoiu Frudisiac
While not exclusively vegetarian, Frudisiac's menu is heavily plant-focused with excellent acai bowls, smoothie bowls, salads, and veggie wraps. The fresh juices are outstanding. A bright, cheerful space that makes healthy eating feel indulgent rather than restrictive.
Dana Dragomirescu Pukka Food
An authentic Indian restaurant with an extensive vegetarian menu. The dal, paneer dishes, and vegetable biryanis are excellent. Unlike many European Indian restaurants, the flavors here are bold and properly spiced. Vegan options clearly marked on the menu.
Simbio Simbio
Simbio's menu is omnivore but always features creative vegetarian and vegan options — hummus plates, roasted veggie dishes, and seasonal salads. The real draw is the gorgeous hidden garden courtyard, one of the best outdoor dining spaces in Bucharest.
