Traditional sarmale, modern takes on ciorbă, and the finest mici in town — our guide to Bucharest's Romanian dining scene.

Romanian cuisine is far more sophisticated than it’s often given credit for. Influenced by Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian, and Slavic traditions, it’s a comfort-food lover’s dream — rich stews, grilled meats, sour soups, and pastries that have been perfected over centuries.

Bucharest offers the full spectrum of Romanian dining experiences, from historic beer halls where the décor alone is worth the visit, to modern bistros reimagining traditional recipes with contemporary techniques and local ingredients.

How We Chose These

This guide is compiled using publicly available data including Google reviews, ratings, and other public sources. We aggregate ratings from multiple platforms, read hundreds of reviews, and distill the consensus into original descriptions. Ratings reflect real visitor experiences across 2025-2026. We do not accept paid placements.

Essential Romanian Dishes to Try

Ciorbă — Sour soups made with fermented wheat bran or lemon juice. The most famous is ciorbă de burtă (tripe soup), but there are dozens of regional varieties.

Sarmale — Cabbage or vine leaves stuffed with minced meat and rice, slow-cooked and traditionally served with mămăligă (polenta) and sour cream.

Mici (or Mititei) — Grilled skinless sausages made from a mixture of beef, pork, and lamb with garlic and spices. A Romanian BBQ staple.

Tocană — A hearty meat stew, often made with pork or beef and vegetables, served with mămăligă.

Papanași — The ultimate Romanian dessert: fried doughnuts filled with sweet cheese, topped with sour cream and berry jam.

Centrul Vechi

The Old Town is home to Bucharest’s most iconic Romanian restaurants, many occupying historic buildings with stunning architecture.

Caru cu Bere interior

Caru’ cu Bere is impossible to ignore. The Neo-Gothic interior, dating from 1879, features soaring vaulted ceilings, intricate stained glass, and elaborate woodwork. Yes, it’s touristy, and yes, you’ll likely share the space with tour groups — but the building is a masterpiece of 19th-century Bucharest architecture, and the kitchen turns out solid traditional dishes. Go for the sarmale and the spectacle.

Just a few blocks away, Hanu’ lui Manuc offers a different kind of historic atmosphere. The inn’s central courtyard, surrounded by wooden galleries, feels like stepping back two centuries. The food is hearty and traditional, portions are large, and the setting — especially on warm evenings — is magical.

Modern Romanian Cuisine

Not all Romanian restaurants are stuck in the past. A new generation of chefs is reimagining traditional dishes with modern techniques and a focus on quality ingredients.

Vatra leads this movement. The menu changes seasonally, but always features recognizable Romanian dishes elevated through careful preparation and thoughtful presentation. The mici here are exceptional — better seasoned and more carefully grilled than most places — and the house-made cozonac is some of the best you’ll find in the city.

Locanta Jaristea takes a similar approach: traditional flavors in a contemporary bistro setting. Their ciorbă de burtă is rich and perfectly balanced, and the papanași dessert alone is worth the visit.

For Mici Lovers

If you want the best mici in Bucharest without any fuss, head to Terasa Obor. This open-air terrace near the massive Obor Market is where locals go. The mici are perfectly spiced, the beer is cold, and the atmosphere is authentically Romanian — meaning loud, casual, and full of character.
