Day Trips from Bucharest — Best Destinations Within 1-3 Hours

Sinaia, Brasov, Snagov, Comana and Mogosoaia — by train, car or Bolt. Approximate 2026 prices.

TL;DR:

  • Sinaia (2h by train) and Brasov (2.5h) are the most popular — both accessible from Gara de Nord station.
  • Snagov and Comana are perfect for a half day, but you need a car or Bolt.
  • Approximate budget: 100-200 RON per person for transport, entrance fees and a meal.

Bucharest has enough to keep you busy for weeks, but sometimes you want to get out of the city for a day. The good news: within just 1-3 hours you can reach neo-Renaissance castles, medieval Saxon towns, forested lakes and wetlands with surprising biodiversity. Every destination in this guide is feasible as a day trip — you leave in the morning and return by evening. The most popular options (Sinaia and Brasov) are directly accessible by train from Gara de Nord, meaning you do not need a car. For closer destinations (Snagov, Comana, Mogosoaia), a Bolt ride or rental car does the job. Below you will find a quick comparison of all destinations, followed by detailed practical information for each: how to get there, how much it costs, how much time you need and what not to miss. All prices are approximate for 2026.

Sinaia and Peles Castle

Sinaia is the most accessible mountain destination from Bucharest and probably the most popular day trip in Romania. The main draw is Peles Castle — a neo-Renaissance gem built as a royal summer residence in the 1870s. The interiors are spectacular: an armory hall, a theatre, and rooms themed in different architectural styles. Entrance costs approximately 50 RON for the standard tour (2026).

Beyond the castle, the town of Sinaia is worth a leisurely stroll. Sinaia Monastery (which gave the town its name) is a few minutes' walk away. If you have time and energy, the cable car goes up to Cota 1400 and further to Cota 2000 with panoramic views — but this adds a few hours and is best suited for summer visits.

You leave Bucharest by train from Gara de Nord in the morning (7:00-8:00), arrive in Sinaia in about 2 hours, visit the castle and town, and catch a return train in the afternoon (16:00-17:00). You are back in Bucharest by 19:00.

How to get there

Train from Gara de Nord — ~2h, 35-55 RON (IR/InterCity). Check schedules at cfrcalatori.ro. By car: ~1.5h via DN1/A3 (avoid Friday evenings and Sunday evenings — nightmare traffic on the Prahova Valley).

Time needed

Full day (leave ~7:00, return ~19:00). The castle + town need 3-4 hours.

Best season

May-October for pleasant weather. Winter is beautiful but the castle may have reduced hours. Avoid July-August weekends (crowded).

Approximate budget

120-180 RON/person: train (70-110 RON round trip) + castle (~50 RON) + meal (30-50 RON).

Brasov

Brasov is probably the most complete day trip from Bucharest. The medieval Saxon city has it all: Piata Sfatului (Council Square, one of Romania's most beautiful plazas), the Black Church (the largest Gothic cathedral in southeastern Europe), the narrow lanes of the Schei quarter, and Tampa Mountain with its famous hilltop sign.

If you have extra time, take the cable car up Tampa (or hike it in ~45 minutes) for a panoramic view over the city. Strada Republicii, the main pedestrian avenue, is lined with cafes and restaurants for lunch. Brasov has a different energy from Bucharest — smaller, quieter, with an unmistakably Central European feel.

The ideal plan: take an early morning train (6:30-7:30) from Gara de Nord, arrive in Brasov by ~9:30-10:00. Explore the old town and Tampa until 16:00-17:00, catch a return train and be back in Bucharest by 21:00. It is a long day but a rewarding one.

How to get there

Train from Gara de Nord — ~2.5h, 50-75 RON (IR/InterCity). Schedules at cfrcalatori.ro. FlixBus also runs direct routes (~3h). By car: ~2.5h via A3+DN1.

Time needed

Full day. The old town + Tampa need at least 5-6 hours. Leave early.

Best season

Year-round. Spring and autumn are ideal (pleasant weather, fewer tourists). Winter is atmospheric but cold. Summer is perfect but crowded on weekends.

Approximate budget

150-220 RON/person: train (100-150 RON round trip) + entrance fees (~20-30 RON) + meal (40-60 RON).

Snagov — The Lake and Dracula's Monastery

Just 40 km north of Bucharest, Snagov Lake is the favorite quick escape for locals. The main attraction is Snagov Monastery, located on an island in the middle of the lake, where legend says Vlad the Impaler — the real Dracula — is buried. You reach the monastery by a small boat (included in the ticket price, approximately 10 RON).

The monastery itself is modest but atmospheric, and the Dracula connection adds a layer of intrigue. The lake is pleasant in summer — you can rent paddle boats or kayaks. Outside of summer, the visit is shorter but peaceful. This is not a full-day destination: 2-3 hours are enough for the monastery and a walk along the lakeside.

Practical tip: combine Snagov with Mogosoaia Palace on the way back — they are in similar directions and together make a full, pleasant day.

How to get there

No direct train. By car or Bolt: ~30-40 min (80-100 RON one way by Bolt). There are minibuses from Bucharest, but with limited schedules.

Time needed

Half day. 2-3 hours on site are enough.

Best season

May-September for the lake and water activities. The monastery is worth visiting year-round.

Approximate budget

200-280 RON/person: Bolt (160-200 RON round trip) + monastery (~10 RON) + snack/meal (20-40 RON).

Comana Natural Park

Located 60 km south of Bucharest, Comana Natural Park is the largest natural park in Giurgiu County and one of the most surprising natural areas near the capital. The wetlands harbor remarkable biodiversity — waterfowl, water lilies, oak forests — and it is a paradise for birdwatchers and nature lovers.

Beyond the nature, Comana Monastery (founded by Vlad the Impaler in the 15th century, rebuilt by Radu Serban in the 17th century) is worth a stop. It is an active monastery with a peaceful atmosphere, surrounded by forest. The hiking trails in the park are marked and accessible — you do not need special equipment.

Comana is the ideal destination if you want to get out of the city without traveling for hours. It is perfect for a morning or afternoon of relaxation in nature, away from the urban buzz.

How to get there

No train. By car: ~1h via DN5 toward Giurgiu. Bolt: 130-150 RON one way (book your return in advance). No convenient direct public transport.

Time needed

Half day. 3-4 hours on site are enough for the park and monastery.

Best season

April-June (water lilies blooming, migratory birds) and September-October (autumn colors). Summer can be very hot.

Approximate budget

300-370 RON/person: Bolt (260-300 RON round trip) + park entry (free/10 RON) + snack (20-30 RON).

Mogosoaia Palace

At just 15 km from central Bucharest, Mogosoaia Palace is the most accessible trip on this list. Built in 1702 by Constantin Brancoveanu in the architectural style that bears his name — a unique blend of Venetian Renaissance and traditional Romanian — the palace sits on the shore of a lake and is surrounded by a pleasant park.

The interiors house a museum dedicated to the Brancoveanu style. The park is the main draw for relaxation — ideal for a slow walk, a picnic on the grass, or a quiet afternoon with a book. It is not as grand as Peles, but its simplicity and accessibility are precisely the point.

Mogosoaia combines perfectly with Snagov (20 km between them) for a full day out. Head to Snagov in the morning, swing by Mogosoaia in the afternoon, and be home for dinner.

How to get there

Bus: line 460 from Bucharest (check STB routes). Bolt: 40-60 RON one way, ~20-30 min. By car: 20-30 min via DN1A.

Time needed

Half day. 2-3 hours for the palace, museum and park.

Best season

April-October. The park is at its best in spring and autumn. In winter, the palace may have reduced hours.

Approximate budget

120-160 RON/person: Bolt (80-120 RON round trip) + palace entry (~15-20 RON) + snack (20-30 RON).
